UK Ministers have confirmed that from May 6th, British drivers that speed in EU countries can be fined up to £640.
The government had previously agreed the change to EU law, but was originally given a two-year exemption.
Other offences covered in the agreement include failing to stop at a red light, not wearing a seatbelt and using a mobile phone while driving.
An estimated half a million UK drivers are flashed by speed cameras per year in France alone. The Department for Transport said that it would seek to reverse the arrangement when Britain leaves the EU.
The new system will not be reciprocal. The registered owners of vehicles in Austria, Belgium, France, Italy, Spain and the Netherlands are responsible for tickets, whereas under British law, the driver is responsible.
A spokesman for the RAC commented: "Of course, it is right that any UK driver found to be breaking motoring laws in another European country will have to face the relevant penalty as this has been an unacceptable loophole for too many years, but equally, it's also right that any motorist in charge of a European-registered vehicle found to be exceeding a speed limit, or other such offence, in the UK should face the consequences in his or her own country."

Meanwhile (despite being illegal), the local bus driver in Spain continued to chat on his phone and change gear (manual coach, no hands on wheel) all with no fear of being caught because in this area the guardia concentrate on hire cars and foreign registered vehicles  .

Given the new high fine and Brexit, would a UK plate attract extra attention?
Drift just 1 mph, sorry, 1 kph over the limit and they'll be knocking on your window.
Not a way to spend a holiday.

Surely, the only difference is that 'before' Mr. Plod had to stop you and knock on the window, but 'now' they can send a NIP in the post?
Roll on Brexit when we can tell them to shove it. (but will we? I doubt it)

This has been in place for parking fines for some time. The new directive only requires the DVLA to pass on the details of the owner when requested. It is down to the country the offence occurred in to pursue it.
What I don't understand is why it isn't reciprocal as, the last time it happened to me in the UK, the NIP came to the registered keeper of the vehicle.
I think its more of a UK DoT (or whatever they are now rebranded as) cock up in terms of applying the requirement.

There is little to no tolerance in Spain for the cameras when it comes to speeding. I received a fine from them (via hire car company) for doing 82kph in a new camera enforced 80kph tunnel at Lorca. They also use helicopters a lot to enforce some laws, they also have cameras for seat belt and phone offences, although not sure how they can work?

By taking a photo of you on your phone or not wearing a seatbelt.

Obviously!!! But they can only have a camera in one place at a time, cars come in all shapes/ sizes, vans, etc. How will they see into every type of vehicle at the exact time you pick up your phone?

Just stand by the side of the road and see how many idiots you can see using their phone. Take a photo that includes the number plate. Similarly, you can see that people are not wearing seatbelts.
Obviously you wont be able to photograph them all, but whoever said that a camera would catch all of them? And why can't they have multiple cameras?

I still see loads round here, on mobiles, no seat belt.
Not enough Plod to fine them.
