Average speed cameras and a crawler lane for heavy goods vehicles (HGVs) have been proposed to Highways England for the busy A34 road by Oxfordshire County Council's transport panel.

The initiative follows a number of deaths on the road - six people already so far this year.

The proposer, County councillor Stewart Lilly, commented: "The design of parts of the roads needs changing but equally the standard of people's driving is appalling."

He added:"Either way we can't have any more mothers with young children killed in multiple vehicle pile-ups."

A Highways England spokesman commented: "Safety is our top priority and we look forward to hearing the ideas of Oxfordshire County Council and other bodies including the police. We will carefully consider any suggestions that are made."

As soon as I saw the headline I recognised the road as being regularly an accident blackspot.

Specs do seem to be better than just protecting a few yards here and there where the Gatsos are.

I am mystified. For the last 17 years as a whitevanman I have driven on average about 60,000 miles a year without an accident. So how do people have accidents? What are they doing that I'm not? Earlier this week, on the A4 by Hammersmith flyover, there were two cars, with one on top of the other. How does that happen?

The parts of the A34 that I drive over frequently are decent dual carriageway, with no hazards that I can see. So how do six people get killed? I just don't understand.

I know, it always amazes me too, saw similar strange 'accidents' during my time with the ambulance service.

Often comes down to the 'fatal four' or pure inattention by drivers who generally look no further ahead than the rear of the vehicle in front with no forward observation at all giving hardly any time to react when something happens.

Plus of course drivers who vastly overate their driving ability and attempt manoeuvres that they simply can't execute with any safety whatsoever Rolling Eyes

Yes, I KNOW it's that stuff. Nevertheless, two cars travelling in the same direction on a 40mph dual carriageway where it's virtually impossible to get up to 30mph in traffic, still end up with one completely on top of the other? I imagine people would pay good money to watch a couple of stunt drivers do that.

Anything for money.

Nothing wrong with the A34 at all, perfectly good road, as with all roads if you don't treat them with respect then you get accidents.

Stop blaming the road, it's an immobile object, it's the buffoons behind the wheel that causes the accidents, not the road.

It's like saying speed kills. Completely and utterly WRONG! Speed does NOT KILL. If it did then you wouldn't be able to move and you most certainly wouldn't be able to drive, travel on a train or any other form of transport as you'd die instantly due to the effects of inertia.

It's the IMPACT that kills get it right for crying out loud! I'm sick & tired of the same old BS from the pathetic self righteous & dogooder camera lobby.

Actually the impact only kills if the speed is sufficiently high ... Wink

Hallelujah someone realises it!

You penalise those in the accident, not those who pass through the area without any incident at all.

When are the people of this country going to stand up against these bullies with their cameras and speed guns and stop treating everyone like naughty little petulant children?

We're adults and we're also human and we can all make some mistakes and unless you're going to take control away from everyone and automate a car fully which isn't going to happen for a considerable time yet, then they're going to have to live with the simple facts that some people just aren't really cut out to drive or are more susceptible to tiredness/fatigue and error.

Actually I disagree. Far too often those who speed are the ones who kill/injure others as they impact their vehicle into someone else. Often unfortunately they seem to survive and it's the innocents they hit who die.

Since some seem to think they can drive at speed whatever their ability, or more frequently lack of it, the solution to help protect the innocent is to target those who speed, drive carelessly etc. If I had my way we'd have many more average speed cameras and traffic police to enforce the law since too many seem to think they can simply ignore it Twisted Evil

Perhaps we should employ some people in councils who aren't backside kissers to those who're always saying to lower speeds unnecessarily especially on open country roads, like the A34, 303 etc.

With cretins like this & you we'll soon have men with red flags out in front of every darn car in case we knock someone over. OH FFS! You lot are really pathetic.

Time to remove a lot of OAPs too, because they're just terrible, I've reported several recently for doing 20 or less in 30, 40, 50, 60/70 mph zones.

Used FFCCTV camera footage for one who tried to steer into my path as I went to overtake him doing 21 mph in a 30, I'm awaiting further information from the local plod about this individual.

It's the slow coaches as well as the fast one's that cause accidents you know!

I've had numerous occasions over the years on both motorways and A roads where I've been doing the limit, or close to, checked the mirrors, nothing, performed an overtake, then from nowhere some idiot comes steaming up from behind.

If I drive on the M40 from Oxford to Denham doing 70 I'm frequently overtaken by others that make me look like I'm going backwards. I've seen plenty of narrow misses along that stretch. The average seems to be 90 to 100 along there.
