4500 Ticketed By New M4 Speed Cameras
Article by: rob brady Date: 20 Mar 2015
Nearly 4,500 drivers have been issued with speeding tickets by new M4 speed cameras that went live in January.
The cameras, which are situated on the Port Talbot stretch of the motorway, monitor average speeds within a two-mile 50mph zone - the aim, together with safety, is to improve traffic flow along the M4.
A spokesman from GoSafe, the Wales Road Casualty Reduction Partnership, commented: "Excessive and inappropriate speed remains a factor in collisions, associated fatalities, serious injuries and, in this case, also contributes to the traffic congestion around Junctions 40 and 41."
Those caught within a certain speed (up to 64mph within a 50mph area) get offered a speed awareness course costing £85 and avoid points on their licence. The course is classroom based and lasts approximately four hours. Excessive speeders get three points with a £100 fine.
