Hi guys

After using my trusty Ipaq 2210 for many years I am considering upgrading to either the Dell Axim X50v or the Ipaq 4700.
I checked the comapatability list on the Tom tom site and to my surprise on the wired compatability list they are not shown, yet on the BT list they are.
Is that correct ? does that mean as I own a wired version of TomTom I wont be able to use either of the PDA's with Tom tom?

Howard

Can't reply with an answer to all your questions but I recently purchased an Axim X51 replacing my ipaq 3970. First off you will need to get a new activation code from TT which involved faxing evidence of buying a new pda, giving them your product code and pda device code. This all happened in the space of 48 hours and installation worked fine. Can't comment on whether your wired gps shouldn't work as that's part of the setup, chosing your gps.

Thanks for the info longitude. I havent made up my mind which new PDA I should go for, but as I said, according to the Tomtom website both the Axim and the 4700 are on the BT compatablity list not the wired list.

I have installed TTN 5 (version 5.2.1) on a Dell X50V with Windows Mobile 5 that I have just bought on EBAY (the PDA, not the software).

The TomTom site (www.ttcode.com) allowed me to activate the software a second time but I believe from previous posts here that this is now my limit for some time. Since I am selling the old PDA without the software this isnt a problem.

I wasnt required to fax TomTom or anything like that.

Works fine and the install worked a treat which was surprising given some of the postings about TTN5 and Windows Mobile 5.

Greenglide

Could you tell me if you are using the BT connection or the wired version?

Perhaps you should have a read of http://www.pocketgpsworld.com/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&t=32868&start=0 this goes into quite good detail about trying to use a CF GPS unit on the Dell x51. From what I can remember it will not work - Mike

Mike

Thanks very much for that. Having read the thread your memory serves you correctly the Dell Axim X50v is not compatable with the CF GPS unit.
Is a Tom tom wired GPS unit a CF GPS unit? Which leaves the question is an Ipaq 4700 okay with a wired GPS or can that only use BT as well.

A wired GPS is different to a CF unit, the CF unit plugs directly into the device, where as the wired GPS plugs into the serial port, the Ipaq-4700 works fine with the wired unit in the car. But to be honest the Bluetooth is a better option if you are considering using it for walking in addition to the Car based Navigation.
I have seen strange com port options on the Dell x50v as a mate has one at work, it does work - but it doesn't dispalay the com port names correctly and the battery life is poor when compared to the ipaq, also he ended up rolling the opperating sytem on the Dell back to WM2003SE as the WM2005 had a serious flaw which flattens the battery if you leave the memory cards fitted to the device - wierd fault. - Mike

I have been using a HX4700 with TT5 for about a year. I have both a CF GPS for walking and a solar bluetooth one for the car and other times. I have recently flashed the hx4700 to WM5 and it still works fine. The Axim looks quite a bit slimmer, and the 4700 has a horrible touch pad that I've never got used to, but it has CF/SD, wifi, BT and HP protect which I like.

Thanks very much for the info guys.

I have quite liked my 2210 so I was more likely to go with the Ipaq anyway and after what you have said Mike I'm even more inclined that way.
Thanks very much again for all the info. I dont know what I would have done without this forum over the years its been a real life saver.

:D

.... and having tried my CF card with my X50V with WM5 it doesnt work with TTN5.

Not a problem as I havent used it for ages - BT is so much better.

The X50V with WM5 is an odd beast. If you apply all the registry hacks etc from www.aximsite.com it DOES work and its a nice unit. It desparately needs a ROM update but it is clear that DELL are not going to supply one and version 01 of anything is bound to be flaky. WM5 has the tremendous advantage that if the battery runs down you dont lose the contents of memory but there is a performance penalty.

WM5 has nice features but TTN5 appears not to be compatible with the GPS sharing facility - maybe TTN6 will Laughing
