Doesn't GE give the options for the area you want to install?
There used to be a drop down box so that you could download just UK&I even though the unit may have had a much larger mapset supplied by default.
I've a DriveLuxe 51 which comes with Full Europe (is larger than Western) mapping and that is split between North and South. The main file is gmapprom.img which is usually found in the System folder _________________ DriveLuxe 51 LMT D - Firmware 6.70

Only if your device won't accept the full map due to space constraints. Garmin seem to take the view that if someone buys a device with a full EU map then they want the full EU map so that's what they'll get. It would be good if there was an option to select different mapsets though, MapUpdater (Garmin's previous map updating program) did allow that but it doesn't seem to work with newer devices, at least it hasn't whenever I've tried it.
The crazy thing is that if there isn't sufficient room Express does offer you mapset choices! _________________ Where there's a will ... there's a way. |

Ok - haven't tried downloading anything other than the full European maps for a while so they must have changed this.
Presumably, the op. with the issue could 'trick' GE into thinking it was full by making a copy of a large file, renaming it and then GE would offer the smaller map sets. _________________ DriveLuxe 51 LMT D - Firmware 6.70

Yes, that's the normal workaround. _________________ Where there's a will ... there's a way. |

I have a 2589 with full Europe. The latest update is 7.9GB but the device shows 12MB free of 7.02GB so there will not be enough space as I have previously deleted all the unwanted bits.
I decided to see what would happen if I went ahead with the update and, in view of the comments above, expected to be offered a split of the Europe maps but the full Europe downloaded and it now shows as 11.1MB free of 7.02GB.
One problem is that the north/south split of Europe puts the UK in the north mapping whereas it's probable that most UK tourists would prefer it in the south along with France, Spain and Portugal the more popular destinations. |

The split shouldn't be an issue, your nuvi will simply treat it as one map. _________________ Where there's a will ... there's a way. |

If you don't need full Europe then consider Western Europe or even UK&I.
It just gives the unit some breathing space without needing a card. _________________ Satnav:

Like have asked before. Does it actually need much breathing space? Do you have any evidence for this? |

I don't believe you need much free space, what you see is memory that your device uses for storage, there is other memory where the operating system resides.
The advantage is that future map updates shouldn't then need a SD card. _________________ Where there's a will ... there's a way. |

Is there any disadvantage (or advantage) in a Garmin using (or not using) an SD card?
It's a long time ago but I'm reasonably sure that I used to use an SD card in my TomTom 950, with had no trouble having the maps on the SD card and the OS on the internal memory.

I think you're correct. I've had maps etc on a card for a while and never noticed any issues. _________________ Where there's a will ... there's a way. |

I always treat the Nav as a mini computer.
Give it some space to work and reduce the database size (maps) and theoretically it should perform better. _________________ Satnav:

I'm going to 'fill mine up' and try it. I'll report back when done. |

As posted though, the difference is probably not noticeable to the human eye. _________________ Satnav:
